Atmakaraka Sun

My Atmakaraka is the Sun Surya, the greatest longitude or having the highest degree among the planets on my horoscope in the Vedic birth chart..

What is Atmakaraka in Vedic Astrology?

Atmakaraka (from Sanskrit atma- ‘soul’, and karaka- ‘significator) is the significator of the soul’s desire in Jyotisha (Hindu astrology). . Atma means the Self or soul, the very essence of our being as pure consciousness. A person’s soul is the spiritual part of them which some people believe continues existing after their body is dead.

The Atma is the essence of God. It is not Divine, but God Himself.

The Atma resides in the heart as a silent spectator to our life and only comes into our awareness through self-realization. It is the reflection of the primordial being within us.

Atmakaraka is the significator of the soul’s desire. According to the Vedic philosophy, a soul is reborn because it has unfinished desires that were left unfulfilled in the previous lives and it is born again to get another opportunity to satisfy them.

In Hindu astrology, the word, Karaka, is used to mean the ‘significator’ of a particular thing or event and also causes that thing or event to occur.

There are two types of Atmakaraka – the natural Atmakaraka and the movable Atmakarka. If the Atmakaraka favors the activity done by the native then the work is accomplished. While, If the Atmakaraka does not approve the activity of the native then the accomplishment is difficult.

The Chal Atmakaraka or movable Atmakaraka is the planet that has the maximum degrees of all the planets in the natal chart. Hence, any of the planets from the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn or Rahu having the highest degree in the horoscope becomes the Atmakarka. Ketu is the significator of Moksha and cannot be considered as char Atmakaraka. Moksha is the destination of the soul which is the ultimate aim.

For Blessing, recite the following Gayatri Mantra!

Om Bhur Bhuvaḥ Suvaha. Tat-savitur Vareñyaṃ Bhargo Devasya Dheemahi. Dhiyo Yonaḥ Prachodayāt.

We meditate on that most adored Supreme Lord, the creator, whose effulgence (divine light) illumines all realms (physical, mental and spiritual).
